For Emma who will one day ride her own Joey Pony through the woods
Look! The big wooden gate is wide open. Joey the dark brown pony wiggles his ears. Clip-clop, clip-clop! Out of the green field he goes.

Joey trots right into the tall woods. The trees are big and shadowy. Joey sniffs the damp air with his dark nose. What a grand adventure!

Rustle, rustle! Joey hears a tiny noise in the leaves. He jumps back and gives a loud snort! Oh my, what could that be?

Joey is far too curious to run away. He trots over to take a peek. A little gray mouse sits under a tiny mushroom! Hello, mouse, Joey snorts gently.

Squeak! Mouse is startled and scuttles away into a dark hole. Good-bye, mouse! Joey swishes his long black tail. I will find someone else to talk to.

Up in the trees, a fuzzy squirrel chatters loudly. Joey wants to play tag! He trots to the tree and reaches up high.

Tap, tap, tap! Joey tries to climb up the big brown trunk. But Joey has hard hooves, not sharp paws with claws! Oh dear, ponies cannot climb trees.

Joey laughs and walks deeper into the woods. Whoot, whoot, calls a sleepy owl high above. Hello, owl! calls Joey with a happy neigh.

The woods are getting very dark and quiet now. Joey stops and looks around. His heart goes thump-thump. Where is the sunny field?

Hop, hop, hop! A fluffy white tail bounces across the path. It is Mr. Rabbit! Joey knows Mr. Rabbit from his home pasture.

Hello Joey, twitches Mr. Rabbit happily. What are you doing out here? Follow me, and I will show you the way home.

Clip-clop, hop-hop! Together they travel back through the trees. Joey is safely back in his cozy green field. What a brave, curious pony!
